OFFENSE:

Josh Jackson’s career got off to a hot start with the quarterback’s 300-plus yard (235 passing, 101 yards), two-touchdown performance in last year’s opener against West Virginia. Jackson was shakier in big games later in the season – losses to Clemson and Miami – but Monday night could be the third-year sophomore’s chance to show college football he’s ready to be one of the country’s impact players. He has a veteran offensive line in front of him with eager playmakers on the outside.

DEFENSE:

Virginia Tech and Florida State face similar situations on defense. The Hokies are replacing eight starters while FSU lost seven starters from 2017. The Seminoles get the edge thanks in large part to the presence of defensive back Levonta Taylor, who is one of the premier corners in the country. Florida State also returns its most productive defensive lineman in junior Brian Burns. The inexperience on both sides could make for a back-and-forth affair.

Coach Justin Fuente’s quiet confidence about his offense speaks volumes. Virginia Tech has plenty to worry about with Florida State’s dynamic backfield, but there’s no reason the Hokies can’t dictate the tempo. They averaged 14 plays per game more than FSU did last year. Taggart will want to increase his team’s pace this season, but that might take time. If Virginia Tech can limit FSU’s explosive plays they have a shot to escape Tallahassee with an upset win.
