Cano (30-7-1, 1 NC, 21 KOs) is trying to rebuild his 12-year career after losing three of his five most recent fights. Some of those losses, such as his 10-round split decision defeat to Fidel Maldonado Jr. in June 2017, were close. But Cano’s second-round TKO loss to Marcelino “Nino" Lopez in October 2017 did not bode well for the veteran. Nonetheless, he sounded optimistic going to the Madiev bout.
Cano, 28, has tallied solid victories over such capable boxers as Mauricio Herrera, Ashley Theophane and Francisco Contreras. But arguably his finest performance came when he challenged Paulie Malignaggi for a welterweight title in October 2012. Cano started slowly, but came storming down the stretch, knocking down Malignaggi with a right hand in the 11th-round.
